THE ROLE OF HEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS IN IDENTIFYING MODERATE FROM SEVERE COVID-19 CASES

Abstract

Background: As severe cases  of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may deteriorate rapidly and develop acute respiratory distress syndrome so finding  simple useful indicators to predict  the severity of the disease is very helpful in its management.Methods :We collected  some personal and hematology data from 108  patients with COVID-19 infection for retrospective analysis. The cases were divided  into two groups;  severe and moderate .Results: The differences  of white blood cells  and platelets between the two groups were non-significant (P >0.05). On the other hand, the  differences between the two groups regarding lymphocyte count and percentage, neutrophils count and percentage, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cells , neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significant, (P<0.05). It was obvious that neutrophils percentage was the most accurate studied parameter  in predicting the severity of COVID-19 infection (The area under the curve (AUC), cut-off, sensitivity and specificity were 0.732, 80.15%, 78%, 70.1% respectively.), followed by  NLR ( The AUC, cut-off, sensitivity and specificity were 0.725, 5.75, 75.6%, 62.7% respectively).Conclusion:  several hematological parameters can help in early detection of the severity of the COVID-19 infection. The widest AUC was of neutrophil percentage followed by that of NLR.
