Al-Bayda city in Libya is facing escalating environmental challenges due to the continuous accumulation of various types of waste, which significantly increases the risk of contaminating vital water sources and poses serious threats to both the environment and public health. The widespread practice of open-air waste burning has further exacerbated health risks for humans, animals, and birds alike. This study examines the environmental repercussions of inadequate planning and mismanagement at the Al-Bayda landfill, with a particular focus on the potential of recycling as a sustainable alternative to open burning. Adopting a case study methodology supported by field observation and document analysis, the research findings suggest that promoting recycling and integrating it into the local economy can serve as an effective environmental solution, contributing to ecosystem protection and enhancing national economic output through strengthened agricultural and livestock sectors. The paper recommends implementing a comprehensive and sustainable waste management strategy that eliminates open burning and expands recycling initiatives, aiming to strike a balance between environmental preservation and economic development.
