TURN TAKING CONSTRUCTION IN DOCTOR-PATIENT INTERACTION
A case study of Libyan doctor and patient interaction at University of Malaya Hospital, PPUM, Malaysia

Conversation Analysis (CA) as a sociolinguistic area is applied for describing the basic mechanism speakers entitled to turns. Turn taking as an essential construction of conversation takes an important part of conversational studies in the field of sociolinguistics. The current study is dedicated to analyse the medical discourse. Specifically it aimed to investigate the notion of Turn Taking in doctor patient interaction. The data is taken from a medical conversation made by a Libyan dentist and a patient. The conversation took place at PPUM Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. The approach of Conversation Analysis as introduced by Sacks (1973) is utilized in the study. This research used a descriptive qualitative method because it focuses on describing turn- taking of a natural medical discussion. The study results in exploring the construction of turn taking, and the devices used to take turns.
