كفاءة وفعالية الأنظمة الحيوية المتعددة السمات

تستند تقنية السمات الحيوية على مبدأ قياس وفحص السمات (الصفات) الحيوية (البيولوجية) للأفراد، واستخلاص الميزات الفريدة من هذه البيانات ومن ثم مقارنتها مع مجموعة النماذج المخزنة في قاعدة بيانات النماذج الحيوية. وتسمى هذه الصفات البيولوجية الفريدة السمات الحيوية ويمكن أن تكون واحدة من نوعين - سمات فسيولوجية وسمات سلوكية.
ترتبط السمات الفسيولوجية بشكل الجسم بينما ترتبط السمات السلوكية بأنماط السلوك لدى الأفراد. وتشمل السمات الحيوية الفسيولوجية بصمات الأصابع والوجه والقزحية وتضاريس اليد وما إلى ذلك، بينما تشمل السمات السلوكية خصائص مثل المشية والصوت وإيقاع الكتابة وما إلى ذلك.
ويتوقف اختيار سمة حيوية معينة لاستخدامه في تطبيق معين على عوامل مختلفة مثل الشمولية، والدوام، والتفرد، وقابلية القياس، والأداء، وما إلى ذلك. وهو يعتمد أيضا على ملاءمة التطبيق، فقد تكون بعض السمات الحيوية أكثر ملاءمة لتطبيق معين يعتمد على الراحة والأمن. ومع ذلك، فمن المستبعد جدا أن تكون السمة الحيوية الواحدة قادرة على تلبية جميع متطلبات جميع التطبيقات.
