Literary Description of Ahmed Nasr

Abstract

The description is a component of the narrative discourse, its effect represented in the aesthetic and artistic value it adds to the literary text. This research seeks to define description, its structure, functions, and relationship to narration; as theorized by those who are interested that: narrative text is an output of discourses, each one of these discourses has a designated structure, methods, and functions. The skilfulness and mastery of the writer reveals itself in his capability to create a type of relationship between the description component and narration one. Further, the research identifies how description can be included in the narration (description by means of relating, acting, or viewing). In addition; the research tackles with the description structure (descriptive system - descriptive syllable - main structure of description - syllabic structure of description). Finally; there will be introduced the description functions in their two types: narrative functions, i.e., educational/informational, depictive, narrative, and semantic functions, i.e., demonstrative, symbolic, expressional, value/ideological, aesthetical, or the decorative-innovative function. The Ahmed Nasr's novel "The Village That Used To Be", can be seen as a text loaded with the description techniques as the writer uses different patterns of description and various functions that capture the reader making him lives into the spatiotemporal context of the events.
