The Wars Between Libyan Tribes and The Pharaoh Ramesses III

Abstract

Ancient Egyptian history is replete with numerous conflicts between Egypt and Libyan tribes. Perhaps the most notable among these are the two wars fought by Ramesses III against Libyan tribes: the first occurring in the fifth year of his reign and the second in the eleventh. As is customary with warfare, it is essential to document the causes and outcomes of these conflicts; however, the existing literature regarding these two specific wars raises several questions concerning the underlying reasons for the hostilities and the identity of the victor. Consequently, the study employs description, analysis, and comparison in an attempt to arrive at the historical truth as accurately as possible. It begins by identifying the Libyan tribes involved in the first conflict, then examines the first and second wars individually-thereby enabling an analysis of the historical events, a comparison between them, and the drawing of conclusions. As is well known, throughout various periods of ancient Egyptian history, Libyan tribes frequently attacked Egypt seeking to establish a foothold in the Nile Valley, drawn by its fertile soil and fresh water; however, they clashed with Egypt’s kings and armies. Among these rulers was Ramesses III, who confronted the tribes in two wars. In the first instance, the Egyptian Pharaoh had attempted to install a prince over them-one whom he had raised in his own palace-but the Libyan tribes rejected this move and attacked Egypt; according to ancient Egyptian sources, Ramesses III emerged victorious in this battle, These texts greatly exaggerate the scale of the victory; however, the triumph was not as decisive as portrayed. The tribes launched a renewed attack on Egypt in the eleventh year of the aforementioned Pharaoh's reign. Records from the Medinet Habu temple-which document the battle the Pharaoh won-indicate that he did not achieve a total victory; it appears an agreement was reached between these tribes and the Egyptian Pharaoh, enabling the Libyan tribes to achieve their objectives by entering Egypt without a fight.
