Patients on hemodialysis (HD) are at high risk of infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), overt hepatitis B virus (HBV), occult HBV (OBI) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). We aimed to assess the prevalence of HBV, antibody to HBV core antigen (anti-HBc), OBI, HCV and HIV among patients on HD attending HD unit of Zliten Teaching Hospital. Eighty HD cases were serologically screened for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), antibody to HCV (anti-HCV) and antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (anti-HIV). Negative HBsAg samples were further evaluated for Anti-HBc and antibody to HBV surface antigen (anti-HBs). Positive anti-HBc samples were then evaluated for HBV DNA by using real time PCR. The prevalence of HBsAg, anti-HBc, OBI, anti-HCV and anti-HIV among HD cases were 2.5%, 25.6%, 0%, 41.3% and 0% respectively. Positivity of anti-HBc had significant relationship with positivity of anti-HCV (P = 0 .000). We concluded that prevalence of HCV in HD patients was greatly higher than that of HBVand None of the cases had OBI or HIV infection.
