Abstract

            In an increasingly interconnected world, the demand for highly qualified translators continues to grow. A career in translation is comprised of language skills, cultural understanding and specialist knowledge. By virtue of translation, the globe has become a small town, making it an increasingly indispensable tool for breaking down the barriers.  Translators nowadays are multifunctional professionals with a wide range of skills. Developing professional skills, achieving expertise in specialized areas and updating knowledge are crucial to a successful career in translation. In addition, advances in technology are bringing unique changes to the translation profession opening up new opportunities to develop and improve the quality of translation product. This study seeks to determine the current challenges to establishing a professional status for translators in Libya and attempts to offer solutions for improving the current situation based on the recommendations of translation agents. The data were collected through a questionnaire using a quantitative descriptive method from a sample of 24 contributors; professional translators, translation teachers, and representatives of translation corporations and establishments operating in Libya. The results show that there are several challenges, namely, administrative, educational, social and financial levels. The solutions proposed for improving the current situation have been discussed thoroughly in the light of the related literature.
