Abstract

Oral medicine is an important part of modern dentistry for treating complicated oral health issues that are related to, or manifestations of, systemic diseases. There are not much studies on oral medical education in Libya, though. This descriptive, cross-sectional study is about the knowledge, attitude, and perception of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) internship students at Alasmarya Islamic University in Libya regarding oral medicine. A modified questionnaire was given to 64 students doing their internships, 79.6% of them responded to the study. The results showed that students knew how important oral medicine was, but they had trouble detecting and treating oral lesions. In particular, 94% of those who answered reported that they couldn't tell the difference between lesions of the same category, and 72.5% reported that their diagnosis was occasionally acceptable. The results elaborated on the gap in Libya's research on oral medicine education and gave educators, decision makers, and healthcare professionals useful information that they may use to improve clinical training and, ultimately improving oral healthcare services.
