The Law of The Sea and The Control of Maritime Spaces and Resources: its Relevance to Developing States

Abstract

The Law of the Sea regulates maritime spaces and resource disputes. This law evolved to protect the maritime interests of states, particularly in light of competing claims over exclusive economic zones and the high seas. Developing countries contributed to its formulation to secure rights to their marine resources, but these gains were subsequently diminished by international pressure. Despite their contributions, these countries face difficulties in effectively utilizing marine resources. The shift in global classification from "developing countries" to "maritime states" is significant, reflecting a shift in criteria toward environmental and marine capabilities, not just economic ones.
